Coming off a 29 point improvement last season which saw the Spirit jump from last place in the inaugural CCHL season to 4th in the Eastern Conference, the Spirit begin preparation for next season with their annual Spring Camp to be held April 30, May 1-2 at the Stouffville Arena.
While it will be difficult to match last season’s improvement in terms of points, the Spirit is looking to take another large step forward in the 2010-2011 season. “We were able to improve the team tremendously last season with the addition of some high quality new players to our team and the continued development of our returning players” stated head coach Craig Donovan. “With many eligible to return and a busy recruiting period ongoing, we expect to improve our results again next season”.
Key to our success has been our annual spring camp where young players are given the opportunity to stand out among their peers and make an impression on our staff. Each year a number of players attending make the team and it allows us to identify players to watch for the next season. Last year, Tyler Ferry, Ryan Zupancic, Brennan Serville, Andrew Doyle, Chris Porter, Shayne Welker, Daniel Fitzgerald and Joseph Chemello all impressed at rookie camp and earned spots on our team. We also identified several 1993 players and have followed them throughout this season.
This year, we expect a few more rookie camp participants to impress and earn spots, along with some who had great seasons playing at the midget level.
With the 4th best goals against average in the CCHL last season, we clearly demand players who work hard at the defensive game, though we are looking to improve our offence this year as we were also one of the lower scoring teams in the league.
We set up camp in a tournament format and incorporate game situations into the games so we can assess players and keep the level of competition high. Last year the feedback from players and parents was quite positive as the games were competitive right down to the end, so we won’t change anything for this year.
