UNLUCKY 7'S FOR THE SPIRIT
Stouffville, October 5, 2008
by Jim Mason, Staff Writer, yorkregion.com
The number 7 is usually lucky.
Not so much for the Stouffville Spirit during Thursday’s Ontario Junior Hockey League game against the St. Michael’s Buzzers at the Stouffville Arena.
The Buzzers handed the Spirit their seventh straight loss, a 7-3 decision.
The Spirit led 3-2 after one period.
But from there, it was all downhill as the Buzzers scored the only two goals of both the second and third periods.
Matt McCann, Craig McDowell and Matt Viola scored for the Spirit, who are in last place in the Central Division with one shootout win, one shootout loss and eight losses.
The Buzzers outshot the Spirit 41-32 in a game that honoured former Stouffville captain Randy Johnston with the retirement of his No. 26. Johnston will play for Muskegon in the International league this season.
After last night’s re-match at St. Michael’s in Toronto, the Spirit will play Monday in Hamilton against the Red Wings.
Spirited notes: Former Spirit forward Ethan Werek scored a highlight-reel goal for his first in the Ontario Hockey League in a 6-4 loss against the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors last week.

ST. MIKES STEALS WIN FROM THE SPIRIT
Stouffville, October 3, 2008
by Jim Mason, Staff Writer, yorkregion.com
The Stouffville Spirit was six seconds away from snapping a seven-game losing streak in the most unlikeliest of locations Friday night.
Then, with an assist from a penalty call, the funk had new life. It is now eight games old.
The Spirit, which has won one game in 11 Ontario Junior Hockey League starts this fall, lost 5-4 to the St. Michael’s Buzzers in a shootout in Toronto.
The Spirit led 4-3 until the Buzzers tied the score with six seconds on the clock at historic St. Mike’s, where the Buzzers are money most nights. A boarding penalty to the Spirit’s Donald Maloney, son of Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney, with 29 seconds to go gave the Buzzers the power play chance.
The Buzzers won the shootout 2-1, with Tyler Allen getting the winner.
The loss spoiled an outstanding outing for Spirit forward Matt McCann. The 20-year-old from Newmarket had a hat trick, including shorthanded and power-play goals in the third period, to erase a 3-2 deficit.
The Spirit is in last place in the new eight-team Central Division with four points. St. Mike’s is in first with

NHL DRAFT DAY - SPIRIT COREY TRIVINO SELECTED 36th OVERALL IN NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Islanders grab popular Stouffville Spirt leader
June 24, 2008
The New York Islanders have selected center Corey Trivino with their first second-round pick (36th overall). With Stouffville of the OPJRA, Trivino finished first on the team in assists with 50 and second in points with 69.
Trivino was second on Team Canada at the World Under-18 Tournament with four goals, helping them lead to a Gold Medal.
Islanders Pro Scout Tim MacLean: “I had the opportunity of seeing Corey play a number of times. He's a very skilled playmaker and adept at finding open linemates in scoring position. Corey has the ability to run the power play. His team used him on the blueline all season during the man advantage. He had a lot of international experience this season and proved he has the ability to step up. Corey is primarily a playmaker but also has a very good shot. He does a good job of getting to the open ice. He has excellent hockey sense and sees the ice well. Corey brings a lot creativity and is a good kid. We're excited to get Trivino in the second round of the draft.” |
